This has been a popular event for our store, but I'd love to hear from others what works in your area/for your store!

I've never tried a bag sale. However, we have Thrifty Thursday where everything in the store is discounted 10% that day. We triple our sales on Thursday.

We have a bag sales! They are WILDLY successful! we store all the expired items that consignors dont claim and re-tag them with generic, plain tags. Only the plain colored tags are available for the bag sale. On Fri the bag is $20, on Sat $15 and Sun $10. We also offer our consignors/preferred email list a thu night private sale ($20/bag still, but they get first glimpse) Not only do we get rid of A LOT of expired inventory, our regular priced stuff sells really well! Its a win win! Good luck!

Sell the sizzle not the steak! People will spend money if they think they are "screwing" someone. Sorry about the vocabulary. Create a reason to come buy at your store. Create a sense of urgency.
No Tax Sales will increase business 30%-45% for a weekend. Just say NO Tax to Uncle Sam You are paying the tax but it is better than 20% Off.
End of the Season Clearance Sales are a great way to clear out inventory for the next seasons stuff.
Anything with a "UP to 50% Off" will increase business 100% or more. Pop a balloon, spin a wheel, pluck a duck, pick a gift On average you will give about 22%-23% total discount for the sale. Do your math and only have one 50% off per 100 choices.
Remember it is the Sizzle! Be creative.
Word of mouth is your cheapest advertising but media is your outside sales force.

This will be our 6th year of biannual bag sales. This will be the 3rd time we've done a PreShop the Sale Event. We've finally gotten most of the kinks worked out, I hope! lol Runs like a dream now, we keep the line moving fast. Seems like every sale we come up with some improvement for some aspect of the sale. In fact, it's kind of spooky; my long time employees and I all have dreams that contain solutions to bag sale problems. Summer sale is always slower than winter sale, but still a rocking day. I now have someone come (manly type) for the first three hours to direct traffic as that was a major problem in previous sales. Any employee that's ever worked for me (unless I had to fire them) comes back and works on bag sale day for me I'm blessed that way with many wonderful employees who have moved on to other jobs/careers but remain good friends. I order lunch delivered for all and we have a great time hanging out for an hour or so after the rush is over.

I had a grab bag discount sale on our third anniversary, What a hit. We took the extra 2 up tags that were left blank. And put 15,20,25,30 % off on them. At time of check the customer reached in the bag and pulled there discount out. we even threw in a couple of 50 % off,the other discounts were even in number in the bag.
