We are opening our first Consignment shop on July 17. It's a furniture and home furnishing shop - 6000 sf - and feel pretty lucky that during this past 30 days of our Consignor drive, we've gotten our store about 90% full already. However, we are losing sleep over how to strike the balance we'll need between keeping ongoing Consignments coming in and of course, sales being made and going out. We'd love to hear insights anyone has on how to gain and maintain a productive Consignor base that keeps the showroom full. Thank you in advance!

Debra, I am starting my 3rd year in the Resale/Consignment business, and worrying about consignements and sales is something you will have to learn to manage, and you will once you get things rolling. Several things I do to compliment my furniture and home furnishing consignments is to go to as many auctions as I can, and keeping my ears and eyes open for people that are moving, because typically they are downsizing or moving away and can't take everything. Also, people need help when it comes to estates and getting household items removed from a property. Be prepared to go and get it. I've even established myself as a dealer for bedding and bedroom furniture, which I sell new, so that if my bedroom furniture doesn't become readily available, I can order some things to keep inventory in the store. Hope this helps and good luck to you !!

Network with local realtors, professional organizers, interior designers, estate sale organizers, etc. These are good resources for clients.

Thank you both so much for the great ideas! New bedroom retailing is an interesting thought... we definitely have had the least success with quantity in bedroom consignment. We are actively doing pick ups from Consignors and that has definitely helped.
We are working on the realtors and interior designers, but haven't yet tapped the professional organizers and estate sale organizers, so that really helps! We open our doors to start selling tomorrow... I really appreciate the advice and responses!
